GENERAL MAINTENANCE

GENERAL MAINTENANCE, Omaha, NE

The classic "tune-up" was once the heart of the automotive business and contrary to some beliefs, today's modern vehicles still need tune-ups to keep them performing at the most efficient levels.

As the pace of technology quickened, the procedures required to perform a traditional tune-up changed dramatically. Highly sophisticated ignition and fuel systems are now the norm, using one or more onboard computers to control critical engine and transmission management functions.

If the vehicle isn't being properly maintained, you're not going to get where you want to go. As part of the 21st Century Tune-up on today's modern vehicles, the following systems should be inspected: battery, charging and starting engine, mechanical powertrain control (including onboard diagnostic checks), fuel ignition, and emissions.

To help ensure good performance, fuel economy and emissions, the Car Care Council also recommends that motorists take the time necessary to become familiar with their vehicle. Study the owner's manual to become thoroughly acquainted with the operation of all systems. Pay special attention to the indicator lights and instruments.

Getting Your Vehicle Ready for Winter

Mechanical failure - an inconvenience anytime it occurs - can be deadly in the winter. Preventive maintenance is a must. A well-maintained vehicle is more enjoyable to drive, lasts longer, and could command a higher resale price.

Some of the following tips can be performed by any do-it-yourselfer; others require the skilled hands of a professional auto technician.

Engine Performance - Get engine driveability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good repair shop. Cold weather makes existing problems worse. Replace dirty filters - air, fuel, etc.

Fuel - Put a bottle of fuel de-icer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Note that a full gas tank helps keep moisture from forming.

Oil - Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual - more often (every 3,000 miles) if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips.

Cooling Systems - The cooling system should be completely flushed and refilled about every 24 months. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (A 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is usually recommended.) DIYers, never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled! The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a pro.

Windshield Wipers - Replace old blades. If your climate is harsh, purchase rubber-clad (winter) blades to fight ice build-up. Stock up on windshield washer solvent - you'll be surprised how much you use. Carry an ice-scraper.

Heater/Defroster - The heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility. Newer models have a cabin air filter that should be replaced periodically. Check your owner's manual for the location and replacement interval.

Battery - The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. Routine care: Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check fluid level monthly. Avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves.

Lights - Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

Exhaust System - Your vehicle should be placed on a lift and the exhaust system examined for leaks. The trunk and floor boards should be inspected for small holes. Exhaust fumes can be deadly.

Tires - Worn tires will be of little use in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressures once a month. Check the tires when they are cold, before driving for any distance. Rotate as recommended. Don't forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.

Carry emergency gear - gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, and a flash light. Put a few "high-energy" snacks in your glove box.

Getting Your Vehicle Ready For Summer

Summer's heat, dust, and stop-and-go traffic, will take their toll on your vehicle. Add the effects of last winter, and you could be poised for a breakdown. You can lessen the odds of mechanical failure through periodic maintenance. Your vehicle should last longer and command a higher resale price, too! Some of the following tips are easy to do; others require a skilled auto technician.

Air Conditioning - A marginally operating system will fail in hot weather. Have the system examined by a qualified technician. Newer models have cabin air filters that clean the air entering the heating and air conditioning system. Check your owner's manual for location and replacement interval.

Cooling System - The greatest cause of summer breakdowns is overheating. The cooling system should be completely flushed and refilled about every 24 months.

Oil - Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual - more often (every 3,000 miles) if you make frequent short jaunts, extended trips with lots of luggage, or tow a trailer.

Engine Performance - Replace other filters (air, fuel, PCV, etc.) as recommended - more often in dusty conditions. Get engine driveability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good shop.

Windshield Wipers - A dirty windshield causes eye fatigue and can pose a safety hazard. Replace worn blades and get plenty of windshield washer solvent.

Lights - Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean dirt and insects from all lenses. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

Tires - Have your tires rotated about every 5,000 miles. Check tire pressures once a month; check them while they're cold before driving for any distance. Don't forget to check your spare as well and be sure the jack is in good condition. Examine tires for tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. An alignment is warranted if there's uneven tread wear or if your vehicle pulls to one side.

Brakes - Brakes should be inspected as recommended in your manual, or sooner if you notice pulsations, grabbing, noises, or longer stopping distance. Minor brake problems should be corrected promptly.

Battery - Batteries can fail any time of year. The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. Routine care: Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check the fluid level monthly. Avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves.

Emergencies - Carry some basic tools - ask a technician for suggestions. Also include a first-aid kit, flares, and a flashlight. Consider buying a cellular phone.

Keeping your vehicle in tune with the environment is definitely a win-win situation. Besides helping the environment, a properly maintained and operated vehicle will run more efficiently, will be safer, and will last longer - up to 50% longer, according to a survey of ASE-certified Master Auto Technicians.

The following tips should put you on the road to environmentally conscious car care.

  • Keep your engine tuned. A misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency as much as 30%.
  • Follow the service schedules listed in your owner's manual. Replace filters and fluids as recommended.
  • Check your tires for proper inflation. Underinflation wastes fuel - your engine has to work harder to push the vehicle.
  • Wheels that are out-of-line (as evidenced by uneven tread wear or vehicle pulling) make the engine work harder, too. Properly maintained tires will last longer, meaning fewer scrap tires have to be disposed.
  • Observe speed limits. Mileage decreases sharply above 60 mph.
  • Drive gently. Avoid sudden accelerations and jerky stop-and-go's. Use cruise control on open highways to keep your speed as steady as possible.
  • Avoid excessive idling. Shut off the engine while waiting for friends and family.
  • Today's vehicles are designed to "warm up" fast, so forget about those five-minute warm-ups on cold winter mornings.
  • Remove excess items from the vehicle. Less weight means better mileage.
  • Store luggage/cargo in the trunk rather than on the roof to reduce air drag.
  • Plan trips. Consolidate your daily errands to eliminate unnecessary driving. Try to travel when traffic is light to avoid stop-and-go conditions.
  • Join a car pool.

Remember, how your car runs, how you drive it, and how its fluids, old parts, and tires are disposed of all have serious consequences on the environment.

Our family has used Jensen Service & Diagnostic for several years on our Honda Accords and our Duramax equipped pickup with zero come-backs. I drive my vehicles up to 1200 miles a week for work. I'm always confident in their work when I hit the road after each appointment. They also treat my wife and children with respect when they bring their cars in for work. If you're looking for professionally performed repairs and maintenance in a clean, comfortable environment this family-owned business is worth checking out.

I have to give the guys a Jensen a giant shout out. My dealer told me my car required a brake job and quoted me $1900. I thought this sounded steep so declined and took the car over to Jensen to get it repaired, knowing it would be less and the job would be done right. To my surprise I receive a call and they told me my car did not required repair for a least another 15,000 miles. Jensen, thank you for your honesty. I will be back in 15,000 miles!

We moved down to Missouri almost 8 years ago but still come back to visit family. We used Jensen Service before we moved, due to their honesty and always being upfront (if something needed to be repaired but didn't need it right away they would tell you upfront) we still come back to them if we have an issue that can wait till we get here. We also trust them so much we send our daughter (that moved back here) to them for service because we know they will not take advantage of her since she has no working knowledge of vehicles. Thank you very much Dave and Mike for your past service and honesty!

Let me start off by saying, I am not the type to go out of my way and write a review period. But the experiences I have had with Jensen Service are outstanding and even enjoyable! I know...who says that about their mechanic right...? Finding a good, honest mechanic has been near impossible in my experience. And for those of you that are reading this review I am sure you have as many horror stories as I do... But the horror stories have come to an end. I have been taking my vehicles to Jensen Service for more than 3 years now and I will NEVER take my vehicle to another place. The whole experience from the beginning to end has been outstanding. You feel like family in a sense of the constant communication from Roger up front to the brothers Dave and Mike in back. I have had Jensen do extensive work such as: the whole front end of my truck replaced (I may or may not have drove up a retaining wall in an ice storm last winter:)), to an oil pressure switch installed, an even simple oil changes. The service and experiences have been TOP SHELF every time. So, save yourself the time it will take reading any other reviews or trying to find the right mechanic, because you wont find any place that compares to Jensen Service & Diagnostics.

Found Jensen based on some internet searches looking for any good reviews. Jensen seemed to get great reviews so I tried it out. Ultimately very impressed. They did a thorough look over the car. I told them what I thought was wrong. They checked and said it was all fine, just scheduled maintenance needed. They took the time to them show me what the scheduled maintenance would prevent using diagrams. I felt they wanted me to understand what they were recommending. They were accommodating and knowledgeable. I highly recommend them and particularly enjoyed that while I was waiting, I observed them interacting with customers by name who we're obviously long time customers. That is a good sign in my book.

Our son's driver side window fell into the door. I called Jensen Service and Diagnostic and they gave me an estimate over the phone. I also called the Honda dealership where we bought the car for a second estimate. The prices were the same but the time frame in which they could fix it was not. Dave and Mike at Jensen Services found the part and fit my son in so he didn't have to drive around in the rain for 2 days. They were very professional and he was in and out of their shop within an hour. We will be back again. Thank you again for making a stressful situation for a very busy teenager manageable:)

I had a short in my car that kept draining the battery. They diagnosed and repaired the car in one day, and at a very reasonable price. I'm mad I put the repair off for so long! I can finally stop worrying about whether or not my car is going to start in the morning!

Due to a poorly installed battery by another service provider damage was done to belts and other areas of the our cars engine while driving down the interstate rendering it undriveable. Dave arranged for a quick (and courteous!) tow to their shop and quickly fixed the damage so that my son wouldn't be without a vehicle. We are new customers to Jensen Service but will definitely be return customers time and time again because of their EXCELLENT customer service and would highly recommend them to anyone. Thanks so much for your help and for turning a really bad situation into just a small inconvenience.

I recently found a screw in my tire and the dealer informed me they couldn't fix it because it was towards the outside of the tire. The dealer said I would have to replace the tire and the opposite tire so the tread would be the same level. I called Mike Jensen and not only was he able to repair it but saved us almost $600 by not having to buy new tires!! Thanks Jensen Service & Diagnostics!!

Having to take in our Durango. I have no worries about the repair because I know they will do what is needed and do an excellent job! No price gouging or unneeded repairs. My son has used them for probably 15 years and we have used them for 12 years. If you need your car repaired, this is the place to go!!

After having been to another mechanic twice with the problem on my car still not fixed and $500 later, a friend suggested Dave and Mike to me. They were able to fix the problem the first time plus guaranteed their work...this began a love relationship beginning about 20 years ago. Throughout the years "the boys" have always taken care of my vehicle plus the fleet of vehicles for which I was responsible at my employment. They always call with the diagnosis and the exact cost of the repair prior to the repair. I have not once been disappointed in the personal service provided by Mike, Dave and their staff of mechanics. My promise is you won't be disappointed in trusting your vehicle service to "the boys"...our family name for Jensen Service and Diagnostic.

They have the best service around. Customer service is important and these guys are always friendly. Whether it's calling the shop or speaking in person, they always keep you well informed of what is going on with your vehicle. It's great that they have technicians who are ASE certified because you know your car is being fixed by someone who cared enough to take the extra time to get certified. I would recommend them to anyone looking for fair and honest work done on their vehicle.

Jensen Service has provided service and repair work on my vehicles for several years. They always diagnose the problem and provide information as to what the repair is going to cost and explain why the repair is needed. If the needed repair is a safety issue, they stress the importance of doing the repair. They do not do unnecessary repairs. They are knowledgeable and do excellent work and use quality repair parts. I have never had to return my vehicle because of poor workmanship. I am very satisfied with their work and plan to continue to use them in the future.

Mike, Dave, and the staff at Jensen Service & Diagnostic are fantastic! I started taking my car to them two years ago, after another car repair shop wasn't able to provide the service I needed for my vehicle. I am from a small town in Nebraska and the integrity and customer service that I receive from the staff at shop is the same I would receive in my hometown. For my money, they are THE "go-to" guys whenever I need work done on my cars. I have highly recommended them to family and friends, and all of them have been pleased as well. NOTE: please do NOT confuse them with Jensen Tires. They are not affiliated with them in any way.

I ran into one of the owners of Jensen while working in his neighborhood with my service vehicle. Mike flagged me down and informed me that one of my tires was very low. He had me pull into his drive way so he could pump up my tires personally. That reality impressed me and motivates me to want to bring my personal vehicle to these guys. I was blown away

I would just like to thank the guys at Jensen Diagnostic for their continued fantastic service. Today we brought in my daughter's Audi that was consuming oil at an unusually high rate but not in an obvious way (like a leak we could see). We brought it in at 3 PM. Within an hour they had it diagnosed and called us for cost approval, sourced the part across town and completed the repair before the end of the day! The cherry on top was that it was for VERY reasonable price.

My job was quite the project but they had everything done within a couple of days not because of rushing but they know how to delegate the resources to get the job done. I appreciated their continued follow-up on the status and customer service in general. If I could give Jensen Service & Diagnostic more than 5 stars I would. I don't usually write reviews, but in this case felt it was absolutely necessary. When I moved to Omaha 8 years ago I had a hard time finding a place to take my car where I didn't feel like I was constantly being up-sold and over-charged. I know nothing about cars, so it was hard for me to know if I was getting taken advantage of or not. I started taking my car here about a year and a half ago. I've had nothing but wonderful service. They are very informative, polite, and not pushy at all. They're always able to get my car in quick and they call me multiple times throughout the process to make sure I know what's going on at all times. As long as I live in Omaha, my husband and I will never take our vehicles to another place. Thank you Jensen!

I had a 2011 suburban with 110k miles that started making a concerning noise. I took it to a reputable shop that I trust. They gave me an estimate of $3000. Not for a second do I believe this other shop was pulling a fast one, but I believe they just didn't have an alternative solution. I got a second opinion from Jensen Service. OMG!!!! He knew exactly what the problem was and fixed it for $200 !!! Now, i cant promise they'll save you thousands on your first visit but they were extremely knowledgeable and now I'll be driving clear across town for all my auto necessities.

After many bad experiences trying to find an auto shop with good & trust worthy mechanics, I was referred to Jensen Service & Diagnostic. I am happy to say, this business is everything I was looking for. I'll never take my car anywhere else. They're masters. They're professional & serious about their work. They're thorough. Example, when I take my (old) car in for an oil change, they really do check ALL, the fluids. And they give my car a thorough check up. And, to my relief, unlike other auto shops, they dont try to guilt me into unnecessary work. They're prices are reasonable. What a relief, I can finally take my car in to be worked on, with confidence that the mechanics are the best and totally honest! .

I have been taking my cars here since I was a teenager (20+ years and 12 cars) They are thorough at evaluating a car and charge a fair price. Additionally, they found an issue with my 1989 Pontiac that 3 other shops couldn?t figure out. One of the engine bolts was gone and when the engine revved the front half lifted up. Eventually the back bolt would have given way and the engine could have made contact or come through the hood. I have always been thankful they found that. Taking a possible new-to-me truck there tomorrow to make sure it is not a lemon.
