What’s Wrong with My Steering?

If the steering on your car of off you have good
reason to be concerned. Steering keeps you in your lane and helps you avoid
accidents. Steering maintenance should be a part of your regular maintenance routine.
The big one is the power steering fluid. Most places will check that when they
do your oil change. But there’s more to steering problems than steering fluid.
As auto repair experts in Omaha for over 50 years, we’ve seen it all when it
comes to steering issues. Let’s take a look at some of the most common steering
problems.

Vibration or Shaking When Driving

Vibrating and shaking in the steering wheel are
probably the most common steering system complaint we hear. But the problem
doesn’t always come from the steering system itself. If it’s only happening
when you brake, then the problem might be your front brake rotors, not your
steering system.

Stiff Electric Steering

Problems with electric steering systems
typically indicate a failure somewhere in the system, and it will take a scan
tool and service information to diagnose and repair it. Wiggling or
disconnecting and reconnecting electric power steering components isn’t a good
idea, because the terminals can lose their gripping quickly. If you have stiff
steering visiting a mechanic is your best bet for a repair.

Hydraulic Leaks

If you’re noticing leaks on the driveway or
parking space, you may have a leaking seal, O-rings, crimps, or your fluid may
have been incorrectly topped off. If the source of the leak isn’t obvious clean
off the affected area and move the steering wheel back and forth slowly. If
your steering fluid is leaking, make sure to take care of it – don’t try
driving with no steering fluid.

Steering Wheel is Off Center

Does your vehicle travel straight but the
steering wheel is off-center? The most common reason for this is bad alignment.
This could be due to bent or damaged suspension or steering components.
Alignments are pretty straight forward, and your mechanic can do it in less
than an hour in most cases. They’ll run a report that shows you the adjustments
they made after the alignment is completed.

Steering is Pulling or Drifting

Driving a vehicle that is pulling can be a
workout. Most of the time, the problem is fixed by getting a four-wheel
alignment. However, something as simple as uneven tire pressures and bad tires
can cause this sensation. If you’re not sure what’s causing it, get it to your
mechanic, and they’ll be able to figure it out quickly.

Having Steering Problems?

If you’re experiencing steering problems, don’t
delay getting it taken care of. Driving safety starts at the wheel, and you
should never have to be battling your steering wheel when you drive. The fix
may be as simple as tire pressure or adding some steering fluid.

Stop by today, and we’ll check it out for you.
